A hero from a time when that word meant far more than it does today. A role model that could inspire kids to persue math and science.
Instead we have “role models” and “heroes” provided to us by any one of the countless in print or online celeb rags that inspire the kids to be what?… the next drug running rapper or Snookie.
“…But the Eagle has Landed; tell your children whenTime won’t drive us down to dust again.”Leslie Fish, “Hope Eyrie” (link to full lyrics above).I haven’t stopped looking up since that Apollo night Launch.
If I was in a comic mood, I’d reply with “Carmen Miranda’s Ghost is Haunting Space Station 3” (I think that’s another one of Leslie Fish’s)…. but maybe later. ^.~
Neil and Buzz, Shepherd, Glenn, Grissom/White/Chaffee, Ride, a school teacher, an Israeli astronaut, Gegarin, and so, so, many more who made us look the stars, as they took the risks, to advance; Mankind.
We owe them all, and the folks who designed and built those “magnificent flying machines”, Atlas, X-15 Crossfield and Armstrong both flew it, eventually to space, actually.
The Wrights, from bicycles, to launch the dreams of Man since before Icarus, so, so, many are owed.

Too bad so few in America today share the vision of Neil, and all the others, who gave us something to be proud of.
That vision was still alive in those who ran the successful Mars landing, Curiosity, yes, that’s what is so rare today.
