In backwards so that you mask does not take the water impact, so your primary regulator does not slap you in the face, so your extra/budy requlator does not slap you in the whatever, the tanks are heavy you do not want them hitting you in the back. With all that gear standing in a boat is not wise. Yes and it is cool even if yo do go head over heels in the water.
afficionado: Also when there is considerable (over a meter) freeboard, the tanks absorb the impact better. Bellyflopping with all that weight coming down on you could be dangerous.
The backroll entry is best for small boats (particularly the rubber boats or Zodiacs). From docks, larger boats, or one with a landing stage, the giant stride entry is preferred. Just remember to keep that hand over your facemask! I won’t forget, after the one time I had it ripped off my face on entry.
