I’m not sure I get it either, but I can say that highschool football season in the 70s started this early.

It happens at our high school. A number of the football players are on the basketball team. Since the sports’ seasons overlap, the football kids always miss the first part of basketball season.

In Michigan (where Frazz takes place), public schools are not allowed to start before Labor Day, but most high school football teams have already played their third game. Sure, there use to be practices and scrimages in the summer, but you didn’t have real games until school started.
Caufield is comes up with a cynical explanation, and Frazz gently chides him for it.
