I’m a flight attendant and the punch line to this comic is Cauldwell’s statement. This size of the luggage people try to bring onboard is unbelievable.
Some of the schools in Los Angeles have graduation next Tuesday, June 19, and last day of classes on Friday, June 22. Our 3-track schools will end on June 29. Each of the 3 tracks has a different schedule. The new school year actually starts the first day of July. Back to school bargains don’t start until we have been back in class for a while. Efficient use of school buildings, and the kids aren’t off quite as long at a time. Same amount of actual class time as regular schedule.
There are some places in this country where kids go to school year-round. They don’t forget as much that way; and you don’t have to try to shoehorn a family vacation into the summer crush. Also, any high-school kid in a typical 10-month school taking an AP class next school year (like my grandson) had to pick up a packet of summer work that will be due when school starts again in late August (and when I went to school, nothing started before Labor Day; now it happens all the time).
Only American schools break in early June, elsewhere summer break usually begins the at the end of June; 9 weeks of summer vacation is already longer than ideal for kids, they lose a lot of what they learn over the summer. More schools are going to “year-round” schedules (usually still with all of July or August off, and another 4 weeks of breaks throughout the year), to cut down on the extended periods outside the classroom. Combined with a track system (different groups within the school on different vacation schedules), this also allows better utiliization of the facilities, meaning less expenditure on buildings – they aren’t sitting empty while everone has the same holidays.
