The Lottery – a tax on people who can’t do math.

I understand that Vince Lombardi said that he was misquoted; what he really said was, “Winning isn’t everything. The will to win is the only thing.” I also recall reading that he added that if you’ve done the best you possibly could then you’ve won, regardless of what the score is.

Generally, gambling is a tax on desperation. If you are certain of winning, it is theft.

Part of the appeal of the lottery is that anyone can win. By contrast, I’ll never win a respectable foot race.I was going to argue that the lottery is not a tax to the few winners, but then I remembered that jackpot winners tend to spend so poorly that they end up worse off than before….

    I always win.

Many of the strangers with whom I share an odd bond may cross under the FINISH banner before I do, but I’m not racing against them, I’m racing with them. So far, I’ve defeated the lazy, quitter side of my nature every time.

Actually we are racing death. That’s why we run.

In grade school, the way I’ve been taught to think about racing is that your opponent is the clock, not the other participants.

I like your attitude Tacopielvr. I shall try to laugh instead of cringe when people think all triathlons are Ironman distance.

I don’t run because my knees would complain too much, but I do exercize, and I try to think of it as being good for me and also that I’m trying to slowly get better. I don’t try to beat anyone. Which is just as well, because especially when I first went to the gym, it seemed like everyone else was so much faster on the machines!
