Many thanks to all of you above who served in Viet Nam. It was a very bad time for all of us and I just hope and pray that we’re not returning to that time of unrest!
Spent one night in Cam Ranh, end of 67, on my way out, thought looking at the base might have already been back in the states.
Of course the real reason for the base deal is to “keep China at bay” and keep them from having influence, in the south CHINA SEA! The Vietnamese aren’t particularly fond of China to begin with, that little history of centuries of war with them already.
That kid is too young to remember. Let’s remember, Ho Chi Mien was a captain in the US Army. But that doesn’t matter when the imperialists see an open territory to exploit for fun and profit. And it was Eisenhower who stopped free elections (which the CIA said Ho would win 85%) and sent “advisors” to SVN corporate shills, not “FDR/HST”.
mikefive: I also found it was hilarious some time ago to read that components for Hueys are now being produced, in Viet Nam!! Not t mention all the clothing, tents, shoes, and electronics they’re now making there, for U.S. companies, that laid off all their American employees and closed the plants. Soooo, more proof who “won” the war in Viet Nam???
vietnam is a beautiful country. top gear journeyed from saigon to hai phong. what would vietnam look like now if the elections were held and ho won? would it look like tito’s yugoslavia or burma? would that mean cambodia didn’t have the killings fields, and pol pot? would that mean laos be not involved in their neighbors’ business?
Mikefive: The real irony of the Texico and Royal Dutch Shell leases we killed so many to defend is (1) They turned out not to be as productive as advertised, and (2) Those multinationals still own the leases under Communism.

Not surprising, Vietnam is embracing capitalism, and is fast becoming the Hong Kong of the 21st Century.

It’s all about projecting power, folks.Sometimes you don’t have to fire a shot when an US Navy aircraft carrier is in the neighborhood.
