Actually, I know several conservatives that are genuinely not anti-gay. I also know a lesbian who is anti gay marriage. It takes all kinds to make the world go ’round.
And I know a bunch of white people that don’t want marriage equality, and they truly don’t know why they don’t. Yes, they do spout the talking points given to them by right wingers and some churches, but they really don’t know why they are in favor of discrimination.
Any country claiming that they are a free and open society that provides and protects the freedom and equality of their citizens (religiously, politically, philosophically, sexually, ethnically, and socially) is but a Lie unless it applies equally to all of their citizens v. just a "selected” few, or even the selected many, but not too all.
This country, America, is supposed to have a secular government that does not discriminate against religions In-Accordance-With our Constitution’s 1st Amendment. Yet today anti-democratic, anti-American, anti-personal freedom and equality religious groups, churches, and certain elected officials, in 33 States, have succeeded in passing prejudicial laws prohibiting equal rights, equality, and freedoms to the LGBT minority within this country.
This is all too reminiscent of what the Nazi Party and Fascist did to the Jews, Gypsies, other non-Caucasians, political adversaries, and what the South, and for that matter the North, East and West of the U.S, did to Blacks after 1865. Hopefully, optimistically, the U.S. Supreme Court, as it has in the past, will be presented with a civil rights case that will overturn and so rectify the prejudicial and discriminatory laws that are now standing in these States.
Until that happens, every time that someone raises an America Flag there will be a Shadow Swastika, a Shadow Vatican, and a Shadow Fundamentalist Baptist Flag(s) of prejudice, hate, and discrimination that rise with our Flag in quiet denunciation of all that America is supposed to stand for in the world today.
What I find most interesting on the issue is that Liberal, ‘Big Government’ Obama PERSONALLY believes same-sex couples should be allowed to marry, but it should be left up to the individual states to decide. Romney, champion of small government wants a constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage. Kind of shows who is the adult in the race.
Both Obama and Romney are wrong on that one, states shouldn’t be allowed to decide. (Though Romney, with his constitutional amendment, is considerably wronger.) If Alabama’s citizens (a strong majority of whom actually believe that Obama is Muslim) were allowed to vote on mixed-race marriage, or voting rights for black people, or allowing Jews to adopt children, there would soon be no civil rights left in that state. Rights are rights. They are, as Jefferson said, inalienable. The majority opinion does not enter into whether people should be able to have their rights.
Note: as usual, no dot ever appears before this listing. The same applies to Ben Sargent and a few others. Is GoComics prejudiced against progressive viewpoints?
Wow, do cons really think that’s an argument against gay marriage????
marriage between two consenting adults of any gender is NOT equivalent to marrying beings who can’t legally consent to sexual intercourse – children and animals.
When will cons stop trying to make such a false equivalent, STUPID argument?
Answer: when their low IQ followers stop believing it, which will obviously be never.
“Marriage = man + womanCivil unions = non-gender specific unions”-So this woman wants to marry a Silverback Gorilla? You must be okay with that since you would categorize it as a Civil Union. Where is any of this is the gorilla saying “I do”? How can she, you or the Justice of the Peace really know that the gorilla wants to love, honor, obey & cherish this woman? Are you going to teach it sign language? Will the gorilla have an understanding of what he is doing? I think unlikely and a reason to look askance at the thought of marrying a gorilla, chimp, cat, dog, whale some inanimate object or a thought out of the blue. Gays are consenting adults, fully capable of understanding what entering into marriage means. It is also recognized when one of the couple ends up in the hospital, buys property together and any number of other things that need to be respected by others.
