Hey, we can all go to the coffee shop for breakfast, cos the Pennys are safely out of town.Marg can’t join us, though…. she still being detain …um…. enjoying her vacation.Y’know, I hate to make any allowances for the horrible things these two do…but the hotel doesn’t care if you take the small consumables like shampoo, shower caps and soap.
In fact if they have the hotel name on them, they LIKE you to take them, the same way restaurants used to give away matchbooks, so you’ll think of them when you use them.Since that might be next time you’re traveling, it’s well-targeted advertising.I once read it’s the things that start with S… but I’m sure that’s a coincidence.Shampoo (and conditioner) Soap, shower caps, shoeshine packets…they don’t give them to the next guest, cos they don’t know what you opened,and much of it is thrown out.
They even place logo sewing kits out for you to take, as advertising…and in nicer hotels, they have embroidered terry slippers, and you can take those too, cos the next guest can’t use them.
The opposite side of that coin is that hotels have STOPPED putting logos on wooden hangers, towels and robes, along with bedspreads and throw pillows, so people looking for souvenirs WON’T take them.And sometimes things like robes have price tags on them.It’s OK to take it, but you’ll get a bill.They already have your name, address, and credit card and driver’s license numbers, after all.
One thing that gets me is most of the toiletries in low-end motels where the Pennys might stay are cheap and harsh.People pay $69 a night for a so-so motel room, but feel triumphant “stealing” a half ounce bottle of something that costs $3.25 a quart at Target.Then they wreck their hair by using that nickel’s worth of bad shampoo, just because it was “free.”
Mikie — they bill people nowadays who take room furnishings…and they’re not cheap!I seem to remember a strip where the Pennys found that out the hard way.And unless things have changed, the Gideons don’t mind at all if you take a bible.
My ex-wife used to grab everything at motels. Mostly towels. She didn’t care if it had the logo or not, just “free” stuff.
This was in the ‘70s, you didn’t always need to have a credit card then (now you know why you do now). This was fortunate as I didn’t have one back then.
We may not have gotten charged, however the word would get back to corporate and it could make it hard to get a room at that particular chain for a long time.
FYI, I never encouraged her to do this. I even used to try to reason with her that if she took a towel, they may not notice or care, but to grab the whole bundle… well you know the rest. Oh well, she isn’t my embarrassment anymore.
I remember when I was with a group of teenage Boy Scouts who pulled a Penny. Four of us were put up in a hotel room (Statler Hilton in NYC, as I recall). First thing we did when we arrived was snatch all the bathroom linens, even the bath mat, and squirrel them away in our packs. Everything seemed fine until someone wanted to take a shower.
The toilet paper at the place I stayed is better than where I work. I bring my own to work because the toilet paper at the office feels more like sand paper.
Just returned from Puerto Vallarta. The notice in our room said that our chambermaid was responsible for everything in the room, so I was conscientious…even about reclaiming a glass that I took into the dining room that was picked up by the waiter, so that the original 4 glasses were in the room. And tipped well too, of course.
Dry, that is just TOO devious. My parents used to take bath mats (I even have one from Holiday Inn that mom must have left here- all the rest of mine are purchased). I had a crucifix stolen from my pillow by cleaning staff back in my young and innocent days. The places I stayed back in businenss travel days were mostly nice but nowadays I am mostly limited to whatever is near the camping site where our group decides to hold an event so I usually just make sure I have a mini frig. I take along a baby warmer for Fitzroy’s soup and I have cold food or eat out. I often take along my own TP too (and a dishtowl for any eating dishes)
