Thank goodness. If you make it through the first day of camp, the rest is gravy.

I, proudly, have to say that my Mom and Dad never wanted to get rid of me during the summer time when school was out. So camp was never even suggested.

Same thing here, Robert. My mother signed me up for it without asking me first if I wanted to attend it, and that was it until I was too old a kid for it.

I would have loved to go away to camp. We were too poor in those days to even consider it. I’m sure I would have had super happy summers if I could have gone. Swimming, hiking, horseback ridding, crafts. Someone send me this year!

I don’t quite recall how this particular summer camp sequence ends…but Chuck DID shine in a future summer as camp president “Mr. Sack”, one of my all time favorite sequences. Don’t know how many years we are away from that one.

The “Mr. Sack” story arc (the sack was to cover the baseball-stitching rash on CB’s head) is from 1973. It is collected in the paperback “You’re the Guest of Honor, Charlie Brown” from Holt Rinehart and Winston. Just happen to have a copy of it in front of me!

Let’s see… is CB going to enjoy summer camp, just play and have fun with the other kiddies, or is he going to bog himself down with self-loathing, unrealized fears, and neuroticism? I think we all know the answer to that!

How long is he there for again?

If it’s 2 weeks then he has only 13 days to go. You will get through it Charlie Brown!

The “Mr. Sack” story line also appears in a full length cartoon move called, “Race for Your Life, Charlie Brown!”, which is still in print. I endured camp every other year for two weeks at a time. I always felt sorry for Charlie Brown, especially when he went to camp.

I loved summer. Some were spent on my grandparent’s farm which was work, but fun. A summer and half in a day camp was fun but it made the time go by too quickly. A summer in city recreation was awful. Best of all were the summers that were free to pursue all the things that interested me (like hiking, biking and (rainy days) reading the Encyclopaedia Britannica straight through. About the last week of August I would hope fervently for a nuclear holocaust, invasion from Mars—anything to keep from having to go back to school.

The church camp I went to in Salisbury, PA would have been terrific. But most of the girls were always chasing after these young male Gospel singers there. When some of the girls heard these guys were engaged, they all had a crying fit.

I think this is the strip where Charlie Brown meets Roy. Then Linus meets him the following year.

My summers are spent at home with my siblings… Sometimes I go some days to my grandparents farm and have fun. But I pine for the school days, my music school, all those concerts, my orchestra, everything!! Except… Math anf Fisics!!! har har
