I’ve found no use yet in all my 48 years for long division.

Neither have I, which is lucky because I never even came close to grasping the concept.

I had a job where I was required to do long division, multiplication in my head and time was very limited.

Okay, you and 3 friends want to split the restaurant bill …Or, at Heart’s age, the teacher has a box of 300 stickers for an art project and they have to be split evenly among the students; how will she know she got her fair share if there are 20 students in the class?

Then the answer for Heart is 300, the number of stickers that would be her fair share.

Had to, no. But the unconscious thought process of coming up with an effective sentence is based on it. Diagramming a sentence is like using training wheels for learning to do more than talk in grunts…or 140-character tweets.

Logical sentence construction keeps you from creating internet memes based on your poor logic….just think of all those church bulletins that get cited for poor grammar!

Long division I still use sometimes. Calculus I’ve forgotten altogether. The sigma means what again?

Long division is how we calculate batting averages. Therefore, it’s one of the most important elements of mathematics.

Need it to calculate mileage, too. Even if you use a calculator, you need the actual process to do a rough divide to make sure the answer you calculate is correct. Sometimes one does not plug in the correct numbers and the machine answer is way off. The mental processes in math, sentence diagramming, etc. are how you develop a disciplined mind and accomplish your personal goals.

I’m glad that Heart is getting a lesson on school…but long division? I have to agree with her on the long division!

I still use long division whenever I need to calculate in my head. Seeing the numbers presented in such a fashion was crucial to my grasp of mathematics.

One of the rare occasions (possibly the only?) where Tatulli’s Heart of the City breaks the fourth wall
