The “Kidnappers and Slave Catchers” poster was a response to the Fugitive Slave Law of 1851. That law (which, disturbingly, was in accord with the Constitution) required local law enforcement officers and the courts to cooperate in the capture and return of escaped slaves. One of its evils was a provision that the fate of an alleged escaped slave was to be decided by a judge, who would be paid five dollars if he found that a detainee was a free citizen of color, and ten dollars if the judge ruled he was an escaped slave.

The FSL resulted in several dozen people being sent south into slavery. It also fuelled abolitionist sentiments in the north. This included vigilante acts to free several people detained by slave catchers, the passing of laws to impede slave-catchers (including the providing of free legal counsel for their victims), and the writing of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin.”

Well, of course, if you captcha me, I’m going to remain seated. But if you don’t, I won’t. Game on!

Hmmm. A reminder that March 14 is the opening day of Archery Season on crossword puzzles, perhaps?

“Please remain scuted” sounds like something you might say to a stain on the rug.

Re The Blog: the sod roof houses kind of remind me of the Hobbiton set from Lord of the Rings. Neat!

I’ve always wanted FA to feature Captcha words. Only… the Captcha words that we use where I work never make sense. For example: “Hotel ctobio” “Chief odatedpr” “popular ssdesu”

I had never heard the term captcha before and always wondered why I needed to decipher words on certain occasions. Ah the Frog Applause school of enlightenment yet again astounds the uninformed mind.

You just invented the basis for a much better captcha system — have a picture that goes along with the fragmented text. That way the text has context and most people will be able to connect the dots on a string of words to what is in the picture. This should be very hard for a computer to do.

Go easy on shy x 2, Teresa. She probably still believes What the Parrot Saw was a PSA from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Please remain sauteed? I have remained fried for large portions of an occasional evening, but I’ve never been sauteed. It sounds like much more fun than being fried ever was.

Good Lord. In her dodderage shy x 2 has gone around the bend and appears to have taken Teresa with her.

P.S. I’m not certain that “dodderage” is a word but I am certain that if it’s not it should be.

Ha ha, Heard happy pie day on the radio this AM and didn’t make the right connection. Was disappointed that I don’t have enough money for a pie. Now all I think of is pumpkin, peach, apple, cherry……I like fruit better than numbers.
