My doctor is from India. I complimented her on her ability to study medicine, and she said that they are taught english in India’s schools.

I work as an engineer, and about 75% (and sometimes more) of my colleagues are from India. I usually refer to myself as Indian instead of Native American around them just to keep things fun ;)

Natives Americans, despite how badly they were treated, helped during WWII to bring down the Nazi regime.

@gmartin997 — We can’t give those people back their land, and they do not currently want it back — because those people don’t exist anymore. They are long dead.

And no, their descendants have no claim at this point, any more than I have claim to vast stretches of land in Europe that my ancestors lost to the Romans.

Every single one of us have ancestors that got screwed. Welcome to the history of the human race. Let’s all give each other a penny and move on.

Most “Native Americans” accept “Indian” or “American Indian” just fine. The collective name for all the tribes is unimportant; the treatment of the first peoples on this continent (or any continent/country Europeans captured) , past, present, and future, is what matters.

Ormia ochracea is right up (or down) there with the ichneumon fly. And Manning is right up (or down) there with Morgan Spurlock.

“Native American” means “one born in America”, which could be applied to most of us, so why don’t we all just try to get along. The land in this hemisphere wasn’t owned by the tribes, either, and some got along with the newer settlers. There were atrocities on both sides in some areas, but the frontier way of life would inevitably be changed as populations grew, regardless of the ethnicity of the peoples. The “I was here first” mentality causes a lot of friction, and when it comes down to it, majority rule in a region establishes the government, boundaries, and laws. It is understandable for peoples to want to maintain their historical culture, from the original tribes to the English, Irish, German, Italian, French, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Vietnamese, and many others who have come to America, but we should also work together for our common interests, with necessary compromises. Members of tribes were not forced to live in the reservations, but those areas were uniquely given the status of immunity from the laws of the U.S.A. and of the states, so they could regulate their own culture and keep outsiders out.

The Native American tribes lost out to the whites for a number of reasons, one of the main ones being that the tribes would not unite against the common foe. The fact of the matter is, the stronger side won, sad as that is in so many ways.

The plight of the Native Americans is sadly titled: “When the West Was Lost.” Listen the Paul Revere and The Raiders old hit of the Cherokee Nation. There’s all truths in that song. I’m a WASP by the way who loves Indians and their culture.

The Indians of India have no racial connection to the American Indians in any way shape or form. They were accidently called “Indians” by Columbus because he thought he had found a new route to India. Some American Indians are thought to be related to asian people while others may be european because of the swastika on their teepees.

I read a short story in OMNI many years ago. The Indians watched the galleons arrive… and, smiling, polished up their machine guns! The point being that the Indians had the same human brains and resources that could have put them on top… and didn’t use it. I hope they enjoyed their snooze…
