But then I remembered how as chairman of the committee to select Bush’s VP he managed to select himself, and was the mastermind behind the neocon Iraq debacle, and gave business to the company he was CEO of (and still gets money from) whenever possible on a no-bid, high-fee contract basis – despite demonstrated incompetence…the most corrupt and dishonest VP in decades, and bleeep good at it!

Cheney sold the citizens of this country to Halliburton and all his other war profiteering buddies. Our tax dollars down the toilet and nothing for the citizens of the USA.

As for Cheney, I’ve never seen a VP/President in our age who was so consistently wrong about so many matters of grave importance. He was wrong about almost everything he expressed a public opinion about … from WMD, to Energy policy, to International affairs. He was an unmitigated disaster.

What was ‘left’ in the 18th century, Republicanism for instance, became the ‘right’ in the 19th when Abolition was ‘left’ which became ‘right’ in the 20th when no one would imagine slavery not being outlawed as nukes and preemptive war was ‘right’. Nobody asked Obama to get further involved with Afghanistan. He also has put it upon himself to have these little excursions in Pakistan. All of these he promised he would do during the campaign. The only war-like action he hasn’t done yet is send troops in Darfur. Nothing stops him from stopping all wars now, shutting down Gitmo and setting the prisoners free. He just hasn’t done anything except increase everything that Bush started. He’s also approved “don’t ask, don’t tell” and the PAtriot Act to continue. Obama is Bush3 and Axelrod is Bush’s Cheney.

Cheney has been wrong about just about everything, from the impact of taking water away from the Sacramento River, to the war in Iraq, the general effect torture has had on America’s reputation, etc. And he was also a lousy CEO at Hallitburton, basically bankrupting the company by buying another firm that was liable for an asbestos settlement. Only way he made it up to them was by starting an unnecessary war. The guy is a classical example of an idiot that keep getting promoted just to get rid of him.

The fact that someone is defending the Cheney empire speaks volumes about what type of person they are.

Not a real citizen… Born in the nation of Kenya years before Kenya existed as an independent nation… Blah blah blah. Birthers are some of the most deluded people in the nation. Even Ann Colter (!!!) said it’s a load of bull. Orly Taitz, the leader of the so-called birther movement was fined $20,000 last month for wasting a federal court’s time. Give it up already.

I recommend either Imperial Life in the Emerald City by Chandrasekaran or Fiasco by Ricks…both reports of the Iraqi invasion and occupation.

The State Department spent over one year enrolling Iraqi Americans and other people who knew the culture and the situation on the ground, and came up with extensive and detailed plans for getting water, electricity, transportation, government, justice, health care, etc. up and running quickly.

Bush II/Cheney, making decisions based on their ‘gut’ shelved all this work, put Paul Bremer in charge ( a man with zip experience in either managing that big an operation or in middle eastern culture), pulled all the hiring away from the State department and, working out of the Whitehouse, hired recent college grads recommended by right wing think tanks, to start from scratch developing a ‘new Iraq.’ Loyalty to the administration and party was the sole criteria for hiring; competence was not an issue. The results were catastrophic.

vhammon, I haven’t read either of the books you mentioned, but have read other accounts of post-Saddam Hussein. Bremer (who never should have been appointed to the post for the valid reasons you cite and others) did much to destroy Iraq’s relationship with U.S. in two weeks, undoing the good work of the U.N. and U.S. up to that time.

He fired all Iraqi military personnel, from top to bottom, leaving thousands of angry Iraqi men all armed with assault weapons. His “de-Baathification” policy overnight removed all the knowledge people in govt. who could have participated and contributed to drafting Iraq constitution, setting up govt. functions, etc.

Bremer also gave the orders that military personnel were not to interfere with the wholesale looting and destruction of libraries, government offices, etc.

And I can confirm others have also reported that the Bush/Cheney administration turned over significant parts of Iraq government functions to the sons and daughters of campaign contributors who had no professional work experience of any kind.

Bremer and his actions contributed mightily to the exodus of the pro-U.S. moderate, working class Iraqis at exactly the point in time they were most needed. Our stewardship of post-Saddam Hussein was tragic.

Really, Jase - then there is no reason we can’t see Obama’s longform OFFICIAL Hawaiian birth certificate? And while you’re at it, in the interest of daylight and full-disclosure, let’s see his school records.

The Kenyan birth certificate is a fake and not even a good one. The country’s name is wrong for the date it was allegedly issued. The city he was supposedly born in wasn’t even part of Kenya when he was said to be born in it. It was part of a country then known as Zanzibar (now Tanzania). The certificate itself was a slightly altered version of an Australian birth certificate for David Bomford in 1959.

Being a lousy typist I’ve stumbled upon the pseudocode for italics, bold-face, em dashes, and bulleted lists, (which I understand is basically how synthetic rubber or something was invented) [1], but this is beyond me.

At one point, Australia was fused to South America, and marsupials were common on both continents. But then the two separated, and South America connected to North America instead. The marsupials in S.A. couldn’t compete with the carnivores (big cats and dogs, mostly) coming down from N.A., and the Virginia Opossum was the only one that survived (after moving north).

I think that’s reasonably accurate.

By the way, there are ‘possums in Australia as well, but they’re actually cute, which came as a shock to me. For one thing, their tails aren’t nasty, scaly, bald obscenities.

I enjoy Simcha Jacobovici presentations on the History channel. I’ve read some Tolkein (Rings trilogy) but not much Lewis (LW&W with my oldest grandson), though I know Lewis has profoundly affected many.

I take Twain’s Holy Land vignettes as dripping with sarcasm, not against Christianity per se, but directed toward those who profit from the tours, relic sales, etc.

I would not have chosen Twain’s writing to factually bolster Christian truth, if that is how the link was intended.
