This happened to me once in Paris. Someone I was traveling with misplaced her wallet, which included her passport and all her money. We spent Sunday morning tearing the hotel room apart before concluding we were going to have to visit the embassy and see about a replacement. On our way down, she stopped in the lobby for a smoke, sat in a chair next to a potted plant, and discovered her wallet, just where she’d put it the night before. In Paris.
We told her she’d just used up a lifetime’s worth of luck from the travel gods and better not do that again.
