    What’s the big deal?She never claimed to be a Nutritionist, just someone who knew how to make food that tasted good.

    I don’t fault Paula for taking the only road to financial success she had. Some of us have college degrees and financial backing from our parents to get ahead in life. From what I hear, Paula had neither. Look around you, we are a society of excess and obesity. A lot of us got “super sized” right along with her.

    Bruce: yes, balance, brother. I’ve had to pay attention to “healthy diet” for decades as well, still don’t need “meds”. I’ve long looked at Deen as kinda the deep-fried Twinkie cook, not much moderation with her. (My dad was a master baker, and I grew up in restaurants, cooking, and her stuff makes me cringe.)

    BTW, mine was diagnosed as a result of exposure to that wonderful “Agent Orange”. I got on the AO register a long time ago because of the huge volume dumped on the provinces I was in. Today, just being in ’Nam is enough to make the roster.

    It should also be mentioned that the fatter you are, the less effectively your insulin works. Some obese diabetics can be “cured” simply by losing weight.

    ne7minder55: You could also mention that the un-natural diet high in corn requires that cattle be given anti-biotics routinely. This leads humans to deal with anti-biotic resistant pathogens. Wouldn’t some “free marketers” like to sound off about government subsidies for growing corn? Those subsidies have a lot to do with cheap snack foods, fast foods, high fructose corn syrup, and our health in general.

    Mhic: no COPD or CV problems at all. Just Type II diabetes and peripheral neuropathy related to AO. BMI is within “normal” range now, was on “skinny” side for most of my life…

    Point on the Deen thing IS mostly about how MUCH Americans consume, like the fact fast food places don’t even OFFER a “small” size any more, and “medium” is often humongous! Story used to be “finish your plate, think of the starving kids in Africa.” Today the average American serving size IS a “starving kid in Africa”.

    Thanks, Agate. I’ve been in lurker mode for quite a while now, occasionally reading a thread here and there, but choosing not to participate.

    To be fair, is there anything Paula Deen hasn’t endorsed? She’s got her face on just about everything food related. Endorsing drugs for food related illnesses is just a natural progression.

    @ne7minder.

    if you want to get the real scoop, read ‘fast food nation’.

    corn and big agriculture and government traveling int he same cart is taking the US to hell in a handbasket.

    If you check the labels on packaged foods, you’ll find High Fructose CornSyrup on the labels of a lot of thingsyou wouldn’t have expected hot dogbuns, for instance.Just a few years ago, at the first signof growing public awareness of that,the corn syrup lobby started runningsome rather heavy-handed and franklymisleading national tv ads that weresupposed to answer their critics.The tag line at the end of these ads is something like "Corn Syruo is sugarand your body doesn’t know the difference!" Okay. and their point is…?

    Bruce: the neuropathy is worse (disabling) than the Type II, as are other neuromuscular effects. What’s frustrating for many is how long it takes for some of these cumulative effects to “nail” a person. What seems “minor” in “youth” catches up.

    My son’s problems are more immediate: he’s 32, walks with a cane, and can’t make it two blocks, needs more surgery, and folks are STILL saying “Oh, those veterans are just scabs”.

    Back to Orange, the impacts on the indigenous peoples have been horrendous. Likewise the ecosystems, and wildlife have seen terrible impacts from both the war, and defoliants. Things weren’t helped when Japan and Australia went in to have all the remaining jungle harvested, especially in the Central Highlands. War is not good for children AND “other living things”.

    ^Agate, well aware. We also have a “chemical dump” north of town where they dumped the “residue” from 2,4,5,T production, and nobodies sure what else. Very dangerous stuff.

    Bruce, btw, it was 30 years after ‘Nam before friends convinced me to see VA. It’s also getting to see the folks who’ve been dealing with vets “problems” more than “everyday” docs, not just the check. A lot of folks feel they didn’t “earn anything”, even a friend with TWO silver stars who was broke and needed help. We finally talked him into it.
