George Romney: Why, Mitt. Welcome to the real world! Mitt Romney: Gee, thanks, George... er... Dad. George: Son, you're here to learn the ways of big business. What would you like to try first? Mitt: Well, Dad, I've always wanted to fire people. Could I try that? George: Sure, son. Here comes some poor sod who's given us 45 years of devoted service. Start on him. But I want you to do it with sincerity and charm. Mitt: Sure, Dad. Hey, you - you're fired!! Now get out!! Wow, Dad, that was fun! Oh, the feeling of power! I feel like Donald Trump! George: Good lad. Now let's try some corporate raiding. Donald what? Punk: That's REAL fun!

I’m as liberal as they come and think that the GOPpers are a pathetic bunch, but I really object to this sort of misrepresentation by the media. It comes close to lying. It’s like the lie they told about Al Gore, when his genuine claims about his support for the Internet (he was its biggest advocate in Congress) were twisted to ridicule him.I think that Romney is bad enough without putting words into his mouth.
Here’s a transcript of what he really said:“I want individuals to have their own insurance. That means the insurance company will have an incentive to keep you healthy. It also means that if you don’t like what they do, you can fire them. I like being able to fire people who provide services to me. You know if someone doesn’t give me the good service I need, I want to say, you know, I’m going to go get someone else to provide that service to me.”
No way is that saying that he enjoys firing people. Especially not for fun!

The real irony about all this is the super right wing of the party is dissing him for doing what a good republican would be proud of.

@Simon_JesterYup! You are most definitely right, they are all at it, and Romney gives as good as he gets (or should that be ‘as bad’??). I suspect that they get away with it because so much of the electorate has goldfish-style memory.I limited myself to the cartoon (OK media) because I didn’t want to get too rant-y.

George Romney was far better than Mitt is. George created jobs in the 50s and 60s, and worked well with Democrats as Michigan governor in the 60s.

Anybody remember when George Romney ran for President? For years I kept a clipping of Oliphant’s cartoon that showed him as a big-shoed hick shaking hands and stomping on peoples’ toes. The caption had an aide whisper, “Lower key, George, lower key.” Supposedly after George said the generals in Viet Nam had “brainwashed” him, his campaign evaporated. (sigh) A long time ago.

Right, everybody knows they’re from The Ponderosa.
George Romney, on the other hand, WAS governor of Michigan,

The sad thing is that I knew a rich young snot, extremely conservative, who acted exactly like this. Total weenie.

Why does Romney look like Dr Doofenschmirtz?

I’d rather elect to President someone who ruthlessly gave their all to the object at hand because he would fully apply himself to the situation such as increasing jobs and improving the economy. Why look down on Romney for running his businesses well when that is the type of person we want to run the country?

MItt: my “private” insurance company is indeed expensive, but even that wouldn’t be possible for me to get AT ALL due to “pre-existing conditions” from military service as an individual under the real “Republican” plan, and I wouldn’t be able to “fire” anybody. So what IS the problem withe the “single payer” you originally leaned toward?

Pat O. is probably my favorite cartoonist, but I do not like this one. It is right on as far as Mitt Romney changes his mind often depending on what he thinks voters want to hear, and not because he has encountered new evidence or ideas. His father, George, on the other hand, supported labor and workers. He changed his mind about the Viet Nam war when he found out that he had been lied to and deceived, just as the rest of us were lied to. His unfortunate use of the word “brainwashed”, although perfecty accurate, subjected him to ridicule and ruined his political career. I probably would have voted for him, even though he was a republican. I think Pat makes him look bad in this cartoon.

“…“birth” is a pre-existing condition…” I love this quip.

Mitt isn’t in the real world, then or now. Put him in a studio apt. with no money for the rent for a few months. then he will see the real world.

Add me to the list of liberals who think George Romney was pretty good for a Republican. He was waaaay out in front of most politicians on Civil Rights. He tried to fight the shift of his party from the “Party of Lincoln” to the “Party of the Southern Strategy”. He also understood that sometimes you need to raise some peoples’ taxes if you want to balance the budget. If he were alive today, I doubt he would want to be in the GOP.
