Alan, Alan…if what he says is “harsh reality,” perhaps it’s because people like him keep sustaining and continuing it.

FWIW, I know from personal experience that there are plenty of people out there (guys and gals) who are mature enough to appreciate brains over beauty, i.e. inner beauty over outer beauty. Can’t say I approve of the lesson Alan’s teaching Annie.

What’s sad or sexist about Alan’s point? He’s being pragmatic in showing Annie a reality of the world. He’s not telling Annie to hide or obfuscate her intelligence, only to complement it with an attractive package.

It would be foolish to ignore aesthetics.

Unfortunately, if the outer package isn’t attractive, a person may not have the opportunity to show inner beauty or worth.
