Does the Ethiopian have $30,000 in student loans to pay off? Because those three minimum wage jobs won’t make a dent if he has that on top of his other obligations. And don’t forget that his three crappy jobs are all “part time” which means he is never given quite enough time to qualify for benefits, so, while he can put food on his table, his family has no health insurance. And because he is making $25,000 a year, which can’t possibly get him out of the rat-trap apartment the four of them are crammed into, he doesn’t qualify as “poor” and so gets no help from anyone.

The kid is also protesting that.

Paul BlunderNobody is hiring engineers in this country. H-1B Visas have either cut wages in those fields and have lessened the demand for graduates of engineering degrees. Most of those guys work for firms in marketing and other areas that pay a little more but are out of their level of expertise. So if they are invading other fields guess what that does to the other graduates of marketing and the other fields? You guessed it! Labor suprlus (or unemployment for short)!

Any New York cabbie who has borrowed the money to buy a cab medallion is NOT working three jobs. He’s driving his cab full time to make a living and the payments. Payne should do his research. And no, there are no jobs available for many college graduates. Turns out that the rich are not the job creators, the middle class is, and the more you fire the middle class, the worse the economy gets.

I think that working three jobs to pay for school would be a good sign that everything’s not fine in this “first world” country of yours. I presume the Ethiopian taxi driver is, or should be, there protesting alongside all other people working 2+ jobs to feed their family. The middle class is all but extinct in the USA while the fat cats of Wall Street get bonuses and bailouts and tax cuts and instead of “creating jobs” keep all the surplus money for themselves, perhaps in offshore accounts – tax-free :)

If class mobility and education costs (plus investment on education by the state) were on par with Northern or even Western Europe, you would still be a world power never seen in history. But I understand that warfare and rich people are more important than healthcare and education. When connections and money are more important than actual intelligence and skills when applying to a University… And overvaluing engineering/lawyer/MD degrees is not really smart, a nation that put too much trust on Nokia can tell you.

Greetings from one of the last bastions of Nordic Social Democracy, Europe, we will soon follow your way. :)

And yet he can afford to take a cab ride to the protest site? Oh that’s right, his fat cat daddy gave him cab fare.

DrCanuck We have no “decent jobs” as the government and unions have regulated and taxed all manufacturing and production so severely they cannot not afford to operate in this Country. As you know we now have a “service” driven economy. Not only does the service industry pay little, it requires little, so all you federally funded collage students who take out loans so the federal and state governments give them the loins share of your tuition, should be taking classes in waiting tables, driving cabs, answering phones, as government regulations and unions have pushed any production out of our once great country. Oh yes as you," Dr." know, the healthcare industry is always booming, but it takes quite a bit of effort, and commonsense to become a medical professional, also a great deal of self-control.None of which is real evident in the occupier’s movement, especially “quite a bit of effort”.
