    You learn as you go, and call a pro for the rest. Nothing worse than cutting a hole in the wall for a window and its too big, then it starts raining. That day was fun.

    Read a book on it, and as long as the main wiring into the house is there and is safe— the breaker box— electrical wiring is easy and kind of fun. Plumbing is also not too hard, though less fun since leaks can pop up even if you think you’ve done everything right. Of course, either thing gets tougher if you have to have an inspector out to stamp code approval on all your work (never bothered to do that myself since I figured we’d probably own our house for decades, as we have). I did things safely, but not always 100% according to details in the code.
