    everything in moderation. like, 1 steak won’t lead to clogged arteries. but, a long history of eating steak will get you a heart attack.

    Just wait until the hype dies down, and the hysteria will move on to a new “deadly food” that causes clogged arteries, high blood pressure, or unsightly hair loss/growth/discoloration…What is the target this week, anyway?

    Carbs are really just a form of sugar. Except for roughage, one needs protein more than carbs. If you have any fat on you at all, you probably have enough carbs. Burn those first. One piece of toast equals the energy used for a twenty minute walk.

    He forgot butter! Was bad, so margarine was brought in. Now margarine is bad and butter is back. I figure if it came from a cow, or chicken, or … camel (milk!), it can’t be all that bad. Unless you’re lactose intolerant, of course. Then you have to milk the soy. WHere does a soy bean plant have nipples to milk?

    bamboo, fat is formed as stored energy, because more was taken in than was exercised off. It’s hard to loose weight with just exercise. Remember, two pieces of toast equal 40 min. of walking, and that’s not counting the hash browns which are starch, which is a complex sugar, aka, a carb. Americans have plenty of energy strapped to their bodies like dynamite…think broccoli, asparagus, beans, Brussels sprouts. carrots, onions, peppers, tomatoes and other fruits. Energy and roughage…Stay away from grains..eat multiple vitamins..

    Working in a research lab, I can say one of our biggest pet peeves is how badly the media distort research studies when reporting on them. Most of these health studies they hawk about what’s good or what’s bad were only ever performed under very specific conditions. But the reporters always leave that important info out. And so you get reports like “Scientists change minds about X” when X was being looked at in 2 different ways. Is X good or bad for someone like you? Good luck hearing what you need to know to figure out that on the news. But X in moderation is usually a good educated guess.

    You got ‘em backward, Night-Gaunt49. HDL is the one that is good for you and thus should be in your bloodstream in greater amounts (H=high is my mnemonic). And don’t forget about the triglycerides. Eating cholesterol is only half of the issue. Your body also produces it.

    Adding milk to dark chocolate does not make it bad; it is the sugar that blows it. As for ‘fast’ carbs -simple sugars, again, not bad … unless you eat too many. As it is with most anything. ‘Slow’ carbs – complex carbs or starches, are far more likely to be turned into fat, as they don’t have a quick ‘off switch’ to tell the body it’s full, so you eat even more. As they are slower to burn off, and other sugars burn first, starches are more likely to end around your middle. Ask any woman about the minute on you lip, lifetime on your hip concept.
