As soon as Brad operates the deep fryer. He’s then accused of arson and jailed

Still say this is unrealistic. If Brad had been in a non-service profession, say, secretarial, or construction, or something like that, then yes, this economy would see him working in a fast food joint after a lay-off. But a firefighter? No. He could apply to another nearby city, or go back to being an EMT, there are no real shortages of those jobs, but there ARE a shortage of qualified people for them. Just can’t believe in this storyline.

He’s laid off. In the real world it would just be a matter of time before he’s recalled. I hope they show him recalled soon.

oldcomicsfan, this is happening today. Firefighting jobs are having layoffs and there are always thousands more people wanting to be firefighters in this country than there are jobs. This plot couldn’t be any more real.

Professor Chaos: Not really. I’ve worked with a couple females who had hair that long. They pony-tail it and tuck it under their bunker coats. The nomex hoods we wear cover it to below the collar.OldComicsFan; Actually, it’s quite realistic. There are WAY too many qualified folks for any given firefighter, EMT or Paramedic position. Sometimes the number of folks showing up to compete for just a position on a future hiring list is in the hundreds, even for small towns. 90% of the firefighters in the US are volunteers.Orion

methinks greg is showing the difference between tonis brother and brad.

tonis brother is a layabout, uncertain of himself.

brad is a worker, and is certain about his life, especially with toni. == finding the right woman can mean everything

but in real life, brad could draw unemployment for a few months until he is called back to firefighting.

I’ve worked at many jobs and would always rather be working than lieing around. After my last lay-off, people would say I was over-qualified for many jobs (and I WAS pulling in a good $ in the last dozen years or so). Now in my 70s it’s nice to work at parchmentine scrolls for my Kingdom and Barony, sew my fancy dress period costumes, experiment with making my food healthier and do other arts and crafts. It doesn’t pay a penny, but a lot more fun. My sunday news show will start in about 15 min.

Toni is saying EXACTLY what a good woman and a partner would say. She knows what qualities Brad has and wants to support him, no matter what. Now we’ll see what Ann Eiffel has to do with this relationship.

All Toni can do is make any bad situation that Brad is going through about herself. His life is in the smurfs right now and she’s the bright spot? That is so smurfy of her.

What happened to your dreams, Brad? They stagnated, because YOU REFUSE TO EVER LET ANY PERSONAL GROWTH, DEPTH OF CHARACTER, OR EVEN PLOT ADVANCEMENT HAPPEN. Oh, sure, Evans is the driving force, but you know what? You went along with it. You kowtowed to your own cruel god. You sat around while Toni was throwing herself at you and moped about how you didn’t feel “ready” for this, and whined about how Bogeyman Dirk would come back at any minute and steal it all away so why bother, and let Momma Jocasta lead you around by the Oedipus complex. Even now, all you can do is stand around at a job you hate when you’re MORE than qualified for something better and mope, because you don’t have the CAJONES to stand up and make any kind of decisions. THAT’S WHAT HAPPENED. (P.S. Your GIRLFRIEND is more of a man than you’ll EVER be.)

Why don’t don’t the citizens of Pittsville get together and protest the laying off of a firefighter. There are so many overpaid city employees that they could have cut some of their pay.

You know, it just seems strange how supportive Toni is right now. Brad could’ve still been a firefighter if he tried to apply for another position or ask around but I don’t mean it’s strange for that reason though. Its strange because when her own brother got a big role in Les Miserables which was his dream (and which is way harder than sweeping up junk in a wiener hut) she crapped on him for DAYS!

I like the way Toni stands by her man. I don’t like the way Brad refers to himself as an ex-firefighter. This implies that he has no intention of looking outside of his town for any work in his field of training. Brad owns a car. Why does he need to take a job that he can walk to? And how is he going to afford rent on minimum wage? He was always crying broke as a firefighter.

The teabags are already on record that firefighting must be a private, fee for service, system. There was a fairly famous case just a few months ago where they wouldn’t even accept payment, but stood there and watched the house burn down because he hadn’t prepaid.
