Ripley's Believe It or Not by Ripley’s Believe It or Not! for July 10, 2011
Transcript:
When a fictitious male name is needed, he is usually called John Doe in the United States, Joe Bloggs in the UK or Australia, and in Russia his name is Ivan Ivanovich! Valentina Tereshkova- the first woman in space- was a factory worker and parachuting enthusiast and had no military or piloting experience when she made her 1953 space flight! Tyrian purple dye was once one of the most expensive materials in the world. Used by kings and Roman noble tea, the dye's manufacturing process required the milking of thousands of sea snails!

1953??? Ms Tereshkova flew aboard Vostok 6 on 16 June 1963!

Valentina Tereshkova flew Vostok 6 in 1963, not 1953. Sputnik wasn’t launched until 1957

Not only the first woman and the first civilian, but now the first teenager in space? Believe it or not? NOT!

Yes, 1953 is definitely not the right year. It was 16 June, 1963.

How do you milk a snail ?

Lousy editors. Comrade Tereshkova flew in 1963, you dummies.

that error was SO blatantly obvious; unless the editor is so young that 1953 and 1963 blend together into such a hodgepodge of ancient history that both seem likely. ….1953, wasn’t that the year the U.S. president was assassinated? what the heck was his name?….uh………

believe it or not…..
I choose “NOT”!
Gellzey almost 13 years ago
I believe the ‘milking’ process involved extracting the snail from its shell and squishing the body. Ewww.

rewwwebb almost 13 years ago

Maybe the purple dye starts out gray? I know the dye for bluejeans starts out orange, and then changes to blue during the dyeing process.

In Japan, it’s Yamada Tarō (山田太郎); In Korea, it’s Hong Gil-dong (홍길동전); in ancient Rome, it was Numerius Negidius; in Israel, it’s Israel Israeli (ישראל ישראלי).
