KING’S HILL OCTOBER – NOVEMBER, 1971A time of rampant self-pity in which, if one can read between the lines, was mostly just bull pucky. The above was written long after the fact and, I may go into it at a later time. The kids were gone and I was alone…. At least as far as human contact goes. I will write verbatim as much as i can, with few editorial changes. This is me, the real Floyd / Shirtail Slim. actually Bert was still hanging aroundell for a little while. Bert was a thief, a liar, a totally usless “anal orifice” that I finally masde leave. Only then was I truly free. and life was fun and at trimes excikting!

KINGSHILL OCTOBER 1, 1971It’s 7:15 A,M, The sun and I have both been up for a few minutes. Affter the weather we’ve had for the last week, it’s a lovely clear dawn. Just a touch of frost, first of the year.Well…. Up to date with Kings Hill. The chicken coop has beebn enlarged, but still needs part of the west wall still needs to be batted..The goat pen is nearly enclosed now, but the walls need to be batted. I’ll also put a window in the west wall. The goat pen is nearly all enclosed now. But the walls do need to be batted to keep out the cold winds. The garden is a disappointment. Late planting and a shortage of water. We had green beans and what turnips the gophers left. With luck, we mayget some corn, squash, a few tomatoes (frost") and carrots. the chickens haven’t started laying yet, but they were under a lot of stress during their move here, in a car trunk., The rabbits have yet to produce because they were under a lot of stress, too. I;ll have to mis and match the rabbits. There is an easy way to sort them outP Put one rabbit in with another andif they immedeately start fighting, they are females. One of the biggest problems has been lumber and nails. We’ve had to use wood from old broken down shacks snf the rusty nails in the boards.Feed for the animals isn’t a problem, yet. But it is liable to become a problem eventually.I am so glad that I have a Master’s degree in improvisation from “Mickey Mouse University”. :-)))))

KING’S HILL 10/1/1971 6:30 P.M.Drove into Colfax to the feed store. >> A 30-45 minute drive along some intimidating narrow roads with steep drop-offs and switchbacks and rusty old wrecked cars far below.<<Now have another 100 lbs. of scratch feed for the chickens and pellets for the rabbits, ought to last into December.Got the west wall window into the goat shed, and the north wall all closed off now. Still have to get the batting done, and trim around the window, A window and wall yet, for the chickens. It’s been a beautiful day. The walnuts are nearly ready, and that could bring in a little cash. The pruning should bring in a bit, too.Today John (the owner) said I can sell some xmas trees, plus , he can probably make a connection with a dealer.>>Nothing ever came of that.<<Also heard Jimi (Hendryx)The “>>” and the “<<” are hind-sight add-ons I’m making.

Stayed out late last night again, and an early appt. to donate blood at the Red Cross today, so we did a bunch of errands. It’s warming up…..it’s 86, and tomorrow will be warmer.

We’re heading out to Great Falls tomorrow……the Blue Angels are flying at the Malstrom AFB airshow. Just love those high performance airplanes!!!!

Might account for the occasional change for no visible reason.I do carry on too much somtimes, The way I am.
