I find myself fond of the concerned-looking kid at the bottom of the middle panel.

Loris the Flash! Andre the Giant! And two unidentified crowd-scene extras. Pensive Petey , prepare to be blitzed! It’s too horrifying to contemplate!

Petey’s bad dream will soon become a nightmare. His out-of-body experience is turning into a near-death experience and his reality will bite horribly in the next panel.

@Hillbillyman; okay, we get it. You don’t like soccer. Stop whining about it. There are more folks around the world who DO like soccer, and appreciate the skill and beauty of the game, than don’t. We’ve heard enough of your rants. Just relax and enjoy the comic, okay?

Suddenly the ball hits Petey and miraculously bounces past the goalie and Petey scores an inadvertent goal, causing him great angst.

See today’s “Dark Side of the Horse” for “Little Neuro in Slumberland”, for Team Cul de Sac. Brilliant!

DCStark, I suspect that Hillbillyman is a Conservative Republican, a Limbaugh Listener who is outraged by what he sees as the “feminization” of American males. Of course, soccer requires no less levels of skill and athleticism than American football, and even though soccer calls for more endurance (half the team isn’t sitting on the bench watching to other half play at any given time, let alone the continuous interruptions between downs), soccer players aren’t 9 foot tall and 4 foot wide…

The rise of soccer in popularity, even though it’s (at present) no threat to football’s preeminence as our “National Pastime” (baseball having fallen behind during the second, military adventurist, “800-pound gorilla” half of “the American Century”) also seems to him (I suspect) as symptomatic of America’s loss of standing as Superpower. Of course it doesn’t help that, in international competition, we’re still pretty bad at the game (although we’re getting better, and are no longer embarrassingly bad); there’s not much of an opportunity to chant “USA! USA! USA!” when we’re losing two-nil to Paraguay.

Finally, and this is a fault he has in common with a GREAT many people, I suspect that Hillbillyman simply feels threatened when his own preferences are not validated by all those around him: “I don’t like this, and I don’t think anybody ELSE should like it either!”

PS: “soccer players aren’t 9 foot tall and 4 foot wide…”

Andre may prove an exception, if he sticks with the game…

They all look like little Star Trekkers on an away mission to send the ball where no Cul de Sac-er has kicked before.(Although with this group, I’d have gone with the blue ‘science’ jerseys instead of the gold ‘command’ colors.)
