Clark, that would work if the elections themselves didn’t take two years to stage. Then again, doing without a president for a couple of years might do this country some good for once.

Clark Kent: I was living in Canada when someone asked in a letter to the editor why, if Britain could hold an election in four weeks, Canada took six. The law was changed so Canada could in five. The US, on the other hand, has a permanent campaign to maximize the influence of the rich. There is no way the US can have a snap election. Even those to fill vacancies take a couple of months.

No, the Speaker gets the presidency if both President and VP die/resign/etc… and that rule’s a lot more recent than Filmore.
