i wonder why people think that layoffs will increase sales.

It will decrease the overheads but profitability is much more complex than that.. especially with all the white elephants around.

the layoffs should start at the top and trickle down instead of being the other way around.

At my previous job, the pres. announced with great fanfare how much money they’d saved by laying off all the salesmen! (Then they fired me and hired a cheaper replacement).

I’m glad I work for government. Not only do I not have to worry about being laid off by idiots who have no concept of how their actions are going to affect the company in a few months (much less a year), I found out today that my bosses are doing their part to stimulate the economy by hiring me an assistant.

It looks like newspapers on paper are heading the way of the dodo, the buggy whip, and the 45 RPM record. On the other hand, people have been predicting the demise of printed books for about 20 years and that just ain’t a-happening. To be continued.

Gee, what an original idea. Bill Watterson did almost the same gag in Calvin and Hobbes years ago.

Well, with the increasing sales of Kindles and other electronic book readers, newspaper and book sales MAY start to decline more.

I’m sure it has affected sales, but I like reading in a chair, in bed, etc. I find it very hard on my eyes to read off a lit screen.

Newspaper stories are relatively short, so, no prob there. I think they can survive just fine online with sponsors still and people advertising in classifieds. However, their pea brained CEOs are going to have to come to terms with the idea that they need the writers!!!

maybe they should ask editors to DO THEIR JOB and EDIT! how many silly spelling errors do you count - even in an online edition of a paper because someone didn’t proofread or hit spell check?

@somewhereintime - actually, the Kindle does not have a lit screen - reading one is very much like reading a large paperback.

Q. Why does an elephant use its trunk as a bookmark? A. That way it always nose where it stopped reading.

It’s kinda funny since our local newspaper just layed off a bunch of employees.

although often similar, this is much too blatant of a C&H rip-off. I will laugh, but I’ll hate every moment of the enjoyment.
