Depends on how many are working on it. When I was a kid the library had an ice cream maker you could check out. With five kids rotating the cranking duties, it was not so bad. …And the result was definitely worth it!
A friend got one as a wedding gift. Her Grandfather pulled her aside and told her that it’s why her grandmother and him had such a wonderful relationship. Whenever an argument was immanent one of them would set it up and they would talk while taking turns turning the crank and by the time the ice cream was ready they would have talked the issue out and so it was a sweet finish both ways. The grandparents had just celebrated their 60th a few weeks before, talk about great advice.
A summer tradition.It kept all us kids busy for an hour or so to make it, and 20 minutes to eat it. And I guess an hour of argument over the flavor. Good times. Good memories.

I remember those things. I thought working that crank was fun for all of five minutes, then it got nasty. The result was not worth the effort.

I have one of those and it makes great ice cream, however it has an electric motor cause I’m too old to crank it!

ajr58: Indeed. Best ice cream I ever had was homemade. I do use an electric church these days, though.
