Look at Calvin’s eyes in panel 4–he’s never seen a Coke bottle! I didn’t think they were obsolete in 1988 or even now for that matter. The Coke in bottles from Mexico made with cane sugar is the best.

Bill Watterson got the idea for this strip from the movie “The Gods Must Be Crazy”.

If you haven’t seen it, see it. It’s really funny.

Love the way the tongue sticks out in panel 3. It’s a sign of the most intense concentration. I know it occurs in many boys and men but I don’t know if it is a trait in females.

“The Gods Must Be Crazy” had a sequel, “The Gods Must Be Crazy II”. I saw both of them, and now own them both as DVDs. Highly recommended!

This comic just shows how stupid I am: I didn’t even know coke was already produced in ancient times. I have to study some more archeology.

The Gods must be Crazy was made in good old South Africa - still one of the best movies to come from here. The San(Bushman) found the bottle of Coke and had just about the exact expression as Calvin in panel 4.

Touche, DAHamilton; I’ve seen the classic-shape Coke bottles for sale in India (all of about four weeks ago), and imitation Coke bottles (Indian brand Campa-Cola used a very similar script to Coke, and identical-shape bottle) have been sold even when Coke was off-market (1977-1991) in India.

If it’s old enough, it might have some traces of cocaine! You think Calvin has an imagination NOW!??

While refined cocaine is very dangerous, the tiny amounts in coca tea, such as coca cola was originally made from, are healthful. If you visit Bolivia, they will serve you coca tea. The CocaCola company imports tons of Coca leaf, and “decocainize” it before making coca tea for the modern product. It was a sad over-reaction, really, to ban the coca along with the refined cocaine. The refined caffeine products (“NoDoze”) are somewhat dangerous also, and a few people manage to kill themselves that way each year. (And a few teaspoons of Nutmeg will cause brain damage - and they sell that in the grocery store.)

A big injustice is our attempts to stop coca farmers from growing their crop. It is not coca farmers, but the cocaine refiners that cause the problem.

Has anyone commented on the lack of paw pads on Hobbes hands?

I read that Bill Watterson originally inked in pads on Hobbes hands in the early strips but thought they distracted from what he was doing with his hands. That is why he has pads on his feet (to give him more of a feline character) but not on his hands.

Another inspiration might be the opening credits from one episode of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, where the big toe of the stomping foot cracks off, gets buried, and is dug up where it is mounted in a museum as the nose of a previously unknown elephantoid creature…

Scoffs! That bottle Calvin found was a pop soda , not a skull. Sheeshhh! Quit imagining about something that was supposed to be. In Virginia City, NV, they found very old bottles and other things from the grounds since the buildings were burned down long time ago. It was very interesting to find something very old while they dig up the grounds out there.

Why Calvin really looks surprised in the last panel. A thoughtful re-reading:

As Calvin unearthed the Coke bottle, he realized its familiarity. And then it all became apparent. He became enraged as he realized that he had been on his home planet all along; and that he was merely a captive soul on …

… The Planet of the Parents.

If an animal actually had a skull like that, I’d be a bit curious as to the original geography of the area. No eye sockets, no jaw bone, no ear openings… must’ve not needed any of those organs.

Ok Happylinks , it’s not about common sense or intelligence , it’s about imagination. The stuff that makes the world that much more interesting thru the eyes of children. Unfortunately , we as adults sometimes lose that magical quality with the passing of the years. Thank God for people like Bill Watterson and their ability to remind us of these simpler times in our lives. Personally , I’d like to see this progress to a bit of a rub and genie appearance!! Whattya think guys??

I guess this is similar in concept to the fact that a pile of cushions from the sofa makes an excellent fort to defend from marauding Indians (or a bunker to defend from slimy aliens if we are being politically correct here (sorry any aliens out there especially if you are of the slimy variety)), hence a well known brand of sparkling tonic can make an excellent skeleton for a dinosaur. The beauty of an active imagination in a child.

He may know what it really is but when he’s in the world where he’s a young Indiana, the real world ceases to exist, and what to you and me is a mundane object becomes a myriad of possibilities of ininite joy.

Time to go an eat the imaginary 3 course meal that my very real wife has just cooked for me. Sigh! If only I still had the full faculties of my childhood imagination, good tho’ it still is it can’t quite manage tastes and smells :(
