Yeah, they turned over a rock and found the grub and he was so cute they just HAD to take him home. He pupated two months later. That’s the story and he’s sticking to it.
Dad: “Actually Calvin you were left on our doorstep by a band of gypsyes and we had to take you in.”
Well.. .That’s what my sister told me where I came from.
Mum’s joked with him a few times too ladywolf17–such as the time when he asked what was in a soup (commenting that he hoped it wasn’t rice) and she answered “maggots” (it actually was a low-grade rice). Dad had a “eww-moment” from that….
Here here Doc! Totally agree. You’d think that being the most read comic here, that the C&H page should be more friendly.
Lighten up people! The next person to post a negative comment particularly at someone else’s expense owes the entire C&H community a drink each! And mine don’t come cheap…
Calvin is lucky to have a Dad who plays an active role in his education. Though this apparent “deception”, Dad has taught Calvin several important lessons such the value of questioning of authority, fact checking and thinking for oneself. (Not to mention the biology of the basic grub/larve lifecycle.)
As a result, Calvin is less likely to become yet another mindless drone who unquestioningly follows whatever talking head is preaching to them from their TV, radio or pulpit. One less drone for the hive. Thank you Dad!
dads gotta have his fun right. but my parents have never tried to deceive me about the way i was born but i was always confused about it. I mean thats the first real mystery for kids isnt it even for a kid like calvin. but i can see where calvin gets his balls from
As funny as this is, I have to register disagreement with Dad. I wish I could find a less harsh way to say this but I think there is an underlying immorality to what Dad has done. There is plenty of time later in life for Calvin to learn that people can lie, but I think Dad owes the little monster…er, little darling a parental duty to tell him as much of the truth as his young mind can absorb. But it IS hilarious.
I used to mess with my daughter’s mind like this. Now that she is in college and far from home I can’t pull these pranks on her any more (plus she’s too smart to fall for them now).
How I miss those days. Calvin’s dad is lucky that Calvin always remained 6 years old and usually fell for his pranks.
interesting thing about Ladywolf and Wolfbyte, be they fraudulent, or be they real, there was a lesson being taught to many here. Unfortunately many did not see that lesson. ladywolf and wolfbyte come back and finish the work you have started please.
Nobody could really make this stuff. Is Wattersman recalling his own childhood, or did he have a child like Calvin? Shiver the thought that there iis a REAL Calvin out there some where.
Wofbyte36 and Ladywolf17, you both are always welcome to this comic strips and comments. You guys can say anything on the comments. Don’t have to say about silly personal or negative issues, just talk about the comic strips only. Have a great pleasant day! :-)
My older siblings used to tell me that they found me in a trash can in Mexico.. and I believed them. WAAAAA!!
wolfbyte, thanks for the info. I hope ladywolf cools off soon and comes back. She is a comic lover like the rest of us and she did not deserve all the negative comments.
Yes, I agree about the last several posts. Anger, especially overboard anger about little things, says more about the one flying off the handle than about the one bearing the brunt of the bile.
The best job I ever had was test pilot in a broom factory. Flying off the handle was not approved by OSHA. Ignore the ignorant comments. They don’t have to read what you say. Come on folks, give it a rest.
My friends told their kids that an eagle pooped them on a stump. None of them are damaged merchandise and they don’t smell bad either!
All three of my grandchildren: 6,4,2 know that babies are in Mommies tummies. They just don’t know how they get there. The 2 year old is the smartest when his Dad tries to gross him out with stuff like this: He goes NO NO NO. Calvin will get even with Dad. We know where he gets his weirdness from though.
I’m with doctortoon. Unfortunately, it seems we must take the bad with the good. However, of all the strips, this one gets more posts (good or bad) than any other I’ve seen. I suspect many of you have been reading C&H (as I have) since first syndicated in the ‘80. Others are new to the world of C&H. I’ve enjoyed many of the comments here. Some are as funny or funnier than the toon itself. Keep ‘em coming.
This is regarding ladywolf17. If the problem that she posted was real, she deserves some help and advice. If they are imaginary, in any other blog or forum it might have been out of place. But in C&H which is about a kid with imagination, it would be hypocritical to admire Calvin and denounce ladywolf.
If I were her, I would not bother about a few negative comments but surely return to enjoy C&H and the forum.
I just want to say , we no longer have problems we’ve already dealt with the situation and have talked with the police about it. further more please stop bringing it up, we wolves prefer to leave things in the past . and stride toward the future. thank you
Well I think it is a shame when someone can be stopped from posting on a public forum because someone else doesn’t like the way they write their comments. Especially when it is on the comics page. Comics are supposed to brighten our days.

I have read that Bill W. used some of his own childhood in the strip.— !
Indeed you did – Bill W. wrote that himself in one of the editions of his comic strip collections, giving numerous examples (and some counter-examples). He says he took his portrayal of the sports and camping fanaticism of Calvin’s Dad from the said fanaticism of his own dad, for example. (My words.)
pschearer: “I think there is an underlying immorality to what Dad has done.”
You. Have. Got. To. Be. Kidding. It’s a freaking comic strip!
So tell me, do you think Elmer Fudd is immoral when he shoots his shotgun at Bugs Bunny? I know, Bugs is only a wabbit, but he’s sentient, intelligent – he can talk. And he’s more intelligent than Elmer by a bleeep sight.
How about Wily Coyote when he tries to kill The Roadrunner? No, wait, that’s part of the natural food chain. Bad example.
Well, how about Itchy and Scratchy on The Simpsons, always blowing each other up and otherwise dismembering each other? And if you want human on human violence, how about Mad Magazine: Spy vs. Spy? They are always commiting mayhem against each other. Isnt’ that immoral?
With all due respect, someone is taking themselves and the comics way too seriously. Go get yourself a tank of nitrous oxide, or take a meditation class or something. Pot brownies would work, too. Go get a few of those, eat them, wait an hour, reread this strip, and get back to us. Trust me, I’m a doctor.
