Are you sure it wasn’t Bob Zamuda? I believe Andy died a couple years before this strip was printed, but there were those who believe he faked his death as a joke.
I love the way that the story of acquiring amnesia etc. is told in two panels filled with ridiculous plot twists. Brethed may “write ’em” but in this case he can’t be troubled to draw ’em.
