Some do a whole fake 301 file, complete with purple hearts etc. Most just b.s. in conversation. I’ve caught a few with fake stories mostly derived from various movies, some from real vets they’ve been around. It’s maddening and sad at the same time.
On a somewhat related note, and if you’re interested, Google Ksenia Coffman, who has doggedly edited Wikipedia entries to give a more nuanced (accurate) account of German soldiers in WW II. It turns out that many of the entries were originally posted by admirers of Nazi behavior during that conflict.
Given my poor self defense skills I prefer not to impersonate a Navy Seal. I might be able to get away with former teacher but I’m happy just to be passing for human.
My husband is a disabled vet, the government issues an ID card specifically for vets. Takes the place of DD214’s. Locally there’s a lot of businesses that offer vets discounts and all of them know to ask for the “VA card” which he happily produces for them. Can’t stand fakers, but it’s not hard to spot them. They always “forget” their card.
