One of the reasons floated to justify daylight savings time was that it would “save electricity” as well as daylight. Now in 1918, this argument had a degree of validity because a relatively high percentage of residential electrical use WAS due to lighting. Nowadays, the argument doesn’t hold water. Most residential electrical use is not for lighting; modern electrical loads are either on constantly, or unrelated to evening lighting (which may also be switched whether needed or not), or they are loads that didn’t exist in 1918, such as A / C and a myriad of other household appliances.
When I was a child, a “meter man” would rap on the back door, open it, yell “Meter man!” and troop through the kitchen, down the cellar steps, read the meter and troop on out. Once a month!
