In SF, the science is usually fictional to drive the story. Many times not explained at all. Many present day stories don’t outline how a car works, it just does.

I remember when the “science” at least sounded plausible. Like one where they built a spaceship that was powered by a small nuclear reactor that vaporized mercury to create thrust.
