We have a adopted medical research Beagle who spent 4 1/2 years in a cage with little human contact. Poor little guy just wasn’t allowed to be a dog. He is 11 now and a full blown couch potato.
There’s a lot skipped here. They set up the story arc yesterday by Opus thinking his mom might be in a cosmetics testing lab. Today Opus gets the full epiphany.
In a lab in Antarctica I once saw a penguin strapped down on a board. He looked at me and gave a plaintive “Awk.” It was comical because the research involved thermoregulation (the only place they can lose heat is through their feet), and the bird was released unharmed.

This arc is extremely disturbing (though extremely important, IMO) so maybe they chose not to run it.
