Hell, I always loved covering the bill on my card and everyone paying me. Always ended up with extra cash even after covering the tip. Nowadays when we go out, everyone just throws out their card and the wait staff just divides it by how many cards. Of course then there are the Apple Pay folks that complicate things…
Nice to have friends that agree to split equally,my friends wouldn’t! Most people would opt for separate checks. Restaurants will try, but I believe legally, they cannot refuse separate checks if you put up a stink.
I remember years ago when I worked for a small pizza shop. Just a till but you hand wrote the docket and added it up yourself. The year 10, 16 years old, shop assistant couldn’t add up an order for 3 pizzas, each being $13.00!!How did she get that far in maths (NOT math) without being picked up?

Tell the server ahead of time that you’ll want separate checks.
