This is how many of our hikes ended when I was little :-) Mum once told me that they always ended up in mud with my stroller and Dad had to go about 30 km to fetch the car.
Five of us “boys” (read middle aged guys) decided to go snowshoeing. This before cell phones etc. We met for a Dennys breakfast and changed our plans without telling wives or girl friends. Got caught in a mountain snow storm and had to trek out without a marked trail. Compass and dead reckoning. Finally, by sun down, we found a road.
In my much younger days I used to play guide for airmen that wanted to experience a wilderness hike. 3 to 5 days back packing. We would park the truck, pack up the mountain. After reaching mid point they always asked when we were going to turn around and go back. Never!!!! Meh hhahahahahah!!! They were always amazed when we walked back to the truck from the opposite direction from where we left. 3 to 5 day walk in a circle!
That wasn’t a parking lot. That was a loading zone. But there is a sign there with a phone number you can call to reach the towing yard where your car is impounded.

Well if you had brought the dog, you would have no trouble finding the car.

Amidst Grizzly Bear National Forest, what can go wrong?

Luckily, there’s only one trail and all those trees look familiar.

Try your car’s key fob. Maybe you’ll hear the horn.

It’s also a metaphor for “somewhere out there amid all that spectacular ugliness there is a parking spot where daddy left the car”.

Now if they would just cut down all those trees…

Next time bring a USGS map OR, wait until they Clear Cut that area! Its probably on the ridge opposite you.

I take pictures of significant trees and rock formations as I go along. Compass helps too,
