I feed them, tried to put more than one feeder out and out of sight of each other. Doesn’t work with the hummers on my end. They want to kill each other. I’ve had them hover inches in front of my face, staring at me. First time I wondered if I was about to lose an eye. Just checking me out I guess.
Ha ha! A few weeks ago I noticed the sugar-water in one of my feeders was disappearing awfully fast — and I didn’t think the hummingbirds were drinking a cup in 2 days! Then I spotted the culprit, a squirrel! It was putting its little paws on the feeder and tipping it to drink the sweet water, but meantime the rest of the water was pouring out onto the ground.
Now I think squirrels are cute and I don’t begrudge them a little treat – but I don’t want to go to all the trouble of boiling up some nectar just to have it wasted like that! I ended up swapping out a heavier (glass) feeder without a “perch” so the squirrel would have a harder time tipping it, and put the lighter plastic feeder in a less squirrel-accessible place. No more spilled nectar (so far!) but squirrels are pretty tricky ;-)

Red water is bad for the birds. I just use sugar and water. 1/4 cup sugar to 1 cup water.

I have a hummer that buzzes me when she/he wants fresh hummingbird feed. If I’m inside, it hoovers by the window til I come out and feed it.
