Mom: Sugar, please. Cathy: Sugar in pie crust?? Mom: When we're in my kitchen, we do things my way... when we're in your kitchen, we do things your way, Cathy. Cathy: We don't do things my way in my kitchen. We do them your way, mom. Mom: That's because you don't really have a wry yet. When you have a way, we'll do things your way. Cathy: I do too have a way! Mom: Your way is just to do the opposite of my way! Cathy: It's my way! Mom: That isn't a way! That's an anti-way! Cathy: If you get to say what is or isn't my way, nothing can ever really be my way! It will always be your way!! Dad: Everything ok in here? Mom: Perfect! The annual pre-turkey pecking order has just been established!

I felt like telling that to my mom once when she changed things around in my kitchen- “You always said that in my house I can do things my way!!”

never ever challenge a woman in her own kitchen. i thought that was an old cliche, but have since found it to be a strong truth.

My mother was always glad for help in the kitchen – and she was such a good cook that I just watched and copied her.

That was Cathy’s cue to walk out (“Well, if I don’t have my own way yet, I’d better go home to my own house and develop it. Bye, Mom!”) instead of enabling her mother’s dominant behavior.
