I went through part of an officer-training program. The one really big secret is “never give the command that will not be obeyed.”

We were cited the example of a young lieutenant who had received order to “take that hill” from distant superiors who did not know that “the hill” had been reinforced with vastly greater numbers of enemy troops.

When he decided they were going to attack anyway instead of delaying and informing command, the conversation went something like this:

“Sarge, shall you frag him or shall I?”

“I’ll do it. I’ve had to do it before.”
