We know why Republicans are so opposed to strengthening a Voting Rights Bill. God forbid all U.S. citizens should be easily able to participate in democracy.
(Didn’t want this recommendation to get lost in the mix)
We think of voting rights as a major issue and cause that started in the mid-60’s with LBJ and MLK. For those who want more about the movement’s origins in the 20th c and significant case law just after WWII, I recommend an audiobook now on sale from Chirp. I am almost finished listening to it.
It is “Unexampled Courage”…story of the blinding of veteran Isaac Woodard and federal judge J. Waites Waring whose decisions caused him to be ostracized and vilified using the same terrorist tactics that the RWNJ knucklewalkers use today.
Woodard was a veteran of WW II who was taken off a bus in a small SC town with a two man police department hours after being discharged as he was returning home after 3.5 years overseas. Judge Waring had relatives who fought with the Confederacy and was among the Charleston upper crust until he had a personal epiphany.
The politics of Trumpism are fascist and Ivanka being Jewish ‘doesn’t matter at all’
“The politics of Trumpism are fascist, and that is a danger whether Trump returns to power or not,” Shanes says. The parallels between what happened in Nazi Germany and the white nationalism mainstreamed by Trump are unmistakable, he adds.
Shanes says Trump’s impact in fostering extremism “grounded in racism and anti-Semitism” is not mitigated by having Jewish grandchildren of his own. Trump’s daughter Ivanka converted to Orthodox Judaism before marrying Jared Kushner in 2009.
I think on the one hand, we are experiencing a level of anti-Semitism in rhetoric and in violence that certainly has never happened before in my lifetime. Synagogues all around the country have security now. When I was a kid, that’s something you’d only see in Europe. That’s a very serious thing. On the other hand, I don’t want to exaggerate it. I don’t want to pretend that as a white-presenting person, with all the privileges that come with that in our systemically racist society, that somehow Jews are uniquely vulnerable right now. I wouldn’t want to compare it with what African Americans have continued to face year after year. But it certainly has heightened in the past five years. The rise of white nationalism is certainly a piece of it and Jews are of course affected by that.
Donald Trump certainly seems to have a racist worldview and he certainly uses racism for political gain and has mainstreamed white nationalism — grounded in racism and anti-Semitism — in a way that would have been unimaginable a generation ago.
Trump supporters shove ‘America First’ aside to sow ‘chaos and lawlessness’
“I’m sure the American autoworkers sidelined because of Canadian protests don’t find Paul’s comments to be amusing,” she continued summing up the GOP lawmaker’s comments by writing, “Filled with resentment and fanning white grievance, Republicans no longer bother to feign concern for American workers.”
“Parents threatening school board members? No problem! Thugs menacing poll workers? Go get ’em! Truckers occupying cities and sending our workers to unemployment lines? Swell! You would never guess this is the party that inveighs against Democrats for being weak on crime or anti-business,” she accused. "
Writing, “This is what all authoritarian movements do,” Rubin called out Trump fans and his Republican enablers for being more interested in “chaos and lawlessness” than making the U.S. a better place to live.

We had voting rights in 2016. Look at what got elected. Just saying.

A number of GOP controlled States have already banned Voting by mail. They claim it is “unconstitutional”. SCOTUS, in all it’s wisdom, agrees!

Get rid of mitch. He is to “smart” for his own good and the good of the country. Power breeds contempt and contempt leads to self engrandizement.
