What are they going to do when the money runs out? How many families live paycheck to paycheck and then they quit their jobs because they don’t want to follow the rules? Can’t wait to see all the Go Fund Me’s pop up
The good of the pandemic is that it has taught many people to live leaner. Maybe we don’t need that super cable plan with its 500 channels and can live on the basic plan with its 125. Maybe we can live in an apartment with two bedrooms and not a mansion with six. Maybe we don’t need two jobs, when we can get by fairly well with just one. Maybe the cost of child care is too high, the pay too low, and so we decide to stay home instead.
“Socialism never took root in America because the poor see themselves not as an exploited proletariat but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires.” —John Steinbeck, American novelist
Traitor Trump is aided and abetted in his delusions not merely by the members of the House who were involved in the insurrection, but even by Republicans with literally nothing to lose if they merely acknowledge objective reality. Case in point: my outgoing Senator, Roy Blunt (Idiot-Mo.) won’t even admit that Trump is NOT “still president.” From the Kansas City Star: (Even Blunt, on his way out the door, is too afraid to upset the Mad King to mention that Trump lost the 2020 election, and has himself been trying to steal it ever since. Asked on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’ on Sunday whether he agreed with Trump’s recent statement that the real “insurrection” occurred on Election Day, the senior senator from our state said, “The election was what it was.”)
I have spoken to a couple of the “quitters” and seen a special on the glass tit. One I spoke to and several mentioned in the special have simply retired. They expect to live on savings, social security and perhaps a side job that they can control. The others have mostly decided to start up their own businesses, mostly doing something like what they HAD been doing but “for themselves”. That includes contracting to their former employer… a thing that’s been going on for decades… but also branching out. The statistics on that aren’t good: About 90% or so of retail startups fail in the first two years. Professional Services startups do better, but also tend to “fail” over into re-employment.
One person I spoke to was the opposite of “quitter”: She had worked prior as a book keeper, then took a job a year ago as the manager (NOT owner) of a franchise retail operation. She’s now moonlighting back on her old job while keeping the manager position. She said that her prior employer was so desperate that she got a significant raise as well as “secondary health insurance” and a 401K package. Of course, she’s also working 12-16 hour days between the two jobs. Her one child is a near-adult, in high school: No daycare needed.

More logic to quitting your job than pretending it’s not over.

Didn’t everyone applaud “Working 9 to 5” and “Take this job and shove it”? My, how times have changed.
