If Wendy wants to brush off Norm, all she has to say is that she is not into him and stop answering his calls. Back in the day, it worked for me. I got the message and stopped pursuing a relationship with her. Years later, when I was in a committed relationship, those who rejected me wanted to hook up with me. Now, they were sad and lonely and found me in their reject pile. Too late! I had moved on and was with someone who wanted to be with me just as much as I wanted to be with her. We are still happy together after many years of marriage.
Poor Norman is like Freddy in MY FAIR LADY. He is enthralled with a person who is not enthralled with him. Unrequited love is sooo painful to the enthralled one. It is also quite problematic for the unenthralled person of the duo. It was ever thus. “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men gang aft aglae — and lea us naught but grief and pain for promis’d joy.” We must not allow our own equanimity to be dependent upon anyone else. Nope. That is not wise to do. Rather, we should enjoy the company of others without being dependent upon them. That is the best way for all involved.
