No matter how good the teacher is, if the parents don’t take time to help the kids, they don’t learn well, which would please Bok.

Gawd you gotta love Bok, so UTTERLY out of touch with reality. I have 30% or so hearing loss, mostly in the parts of the sound spectrum that let you distinguish the b sound from the p sound, f from th, etc. I can hear you as well with your mask on as I can with it off. Honest. It’s not 100% but it didn’t get worse with the mask.

Sick kids and teachers in hospitals don’t learn much in classrooms either, Baghdad Bok. Koreans wear masks all the time and they’re understood just fine. It appe4ars conservative cartoonists are hearing impaired, however.

Get a grip, because, yeah, killing them with Covid is a much better plan.

This is more proof that the Republican party has become a death cult.

If Trumpanzees and the Alt-Reich had taken the simple measures asked for when COVID started and gotten vaccinated, we wouldn’t be in this situation.

Makes me wonder if Bok has a hearing problem …

In a 2008 study, Mendal et al. compared speech through masks for both hearing impaired and non-impaired subjects and found surrounding noise significantly affected comprehension. A more recent study found that hearing-impaired listeners did better when transparent masks were used, allowing them to integrate audio-visual information. In other words, masks did pose some, but not great, problems with comprehension.

I always figure that is the hearing aid test. If you believe people can’t talk through a mask just fine you must be lip reading more than you know.

Having gone to work daily during the pandemic I can say I had no issue hearing anyone while all of us were wearing a mask. Yes, this is anecdotal. But in that regard I’m meeting Bok on the ground he prepared. There were folks who objected to masking, who objected to vaccines, who stated the virus was just a bad flu season who would say “I can’t talk on the phone when I’m wearing a mask and I can’t understand anyone who is wearing a mask.” So I get it that its not just Bok. This still doesn’t make me think that the public good should be tossed aside for a selfish person’s convenience.

If I were in school with masks, I would be in trouble. Wear glasses. Can’t wear contacts. If I wear anything but a N95 mask correctly (covering my nose), my glasses fog up and I can’t see. Try to find a N95 mask. Not easy. I had a packet before all this started, and have found one since. I have one left that is intact. And while I am at it, what do people, like my wife who nearly died after one shot and will die if she gets another according to two doctors, do if “vaccine passports” are enacted everywhere? There are no plans I see for that.

If the Trump administration had not made it a virtue for their followers to eschew the vaccines and mask wearing, this may not have been an issue.

Hey BATTY BOK! It’s hard to learn anything if you’re dead. Masks seem a small price to pay in keeping the youngest and brightest of our youth safe. Kids shouldn’t have to pay the ultimate price because of the STUPID being shared by adults like you. It’s a small task to wear a mask in crowded conditions indoors. Save a life. It could be someone you know.

Well, it’s not all that bad with a mask on. It just muffles your sound a little. But, being masked will require kids and teachers to speak clearly and distinctly, which will probably be a welcome change.

I have had no problems with understanding or being understood because the speaker was wearing a mask of the sort used to protect against covid. Could it be that Bok is wearing his wrong? Chip, you’re not supposed to stuff it in your ear.

A high percentage of comments so far deride Bok, or his presumed political stance. Look, it’s simple: if you don’t like a cartoonist’s efforts, don’t follow his work. The fact that many who do follow Bok on this site voice criticism of his ’toons, means they really enjoy being venomous and derisive. Go figure. People like being angry.

It is possible to speak clearly enough to be understood through a mask… it is also possible to use other communications methods such as chalkboards / whiteboards, hand-outs, computer presentations, etc…. but Bok must have slept through too many classes to have noticed any of them…

Hallelujah the kids are back in school, with friends and peer groups that will certainly make learning and understanding more interesting and fun. Masks or no masks this interaction is what kids need. I for one think this cartoon puts this in a bad light. Masks do not stop you from communicating they may muffle words if the speaker is not speaking clearly but all the teachers I have encountered do not have that problem. There is nothing more interesting than to see students participate in a well run class. And an added benefit this now frees the parents so they can re-enter the work force. Win- Win
