Of course, Dr. Lick gets to avoid school AND have wrinkled tootsies year-round. I’m sure he knows best for Red!

Be happy, Red. Our education system was set up that way originally so that kids would have the summer off to work in the fields of their parent’s farm, all summer long, and usually without pay. I think it persists largely because of teachers unions today.

Nothing prevents parents from adding more education at home after school and during the summers. It doesn’t have to feel like a boring chore. For example, give a child a dollar in change. Tell them they can keep 90% of it if they can get the amount they return correctly the first time. Or first two tries. Go to the library weekly, or as often as workable with schedules. Read together, separate books. Enjoy the quiet time.

The slanted Nation at Risk report was issued under the Reagan Adminstration and since that time know-nothing politicians have been meddling in American education. It seems that every new president or governor (of either party) wants to imprint education with his or her own “wisdom”, thus changing requirements and programs just as educators were coming to terms with those of the previous adminstration. Legislatures justify their interference with public education by saying that the educations system is failing, BUT it only began “failing” when politicians began meddling. Remember that products of the old American public education system won both World Wars, created the artificial heart and put a man on the moon. Politicians meddle BECAUSE THEY CAN!

I believe the correct model you are referencing (at least in that time period) wasn’t a mere two week vacation but a running 6 weeks on, 2 weeks off through out the year.

This isn’t about modern structured and politically biased education systems and whose political institutions are superior to whose…its about the summertime innocence of a barefooted boy and his dog enjoy the escape of people like you….
