Electronic media, as well as people preferring news entertainment handed to them in videos instead of having to read, is killing the local newspapers. And, at least in my area, those local papers failing to cover much local news (instead they reprint what they find online)…
The advertisers – just look at the classified ads vs e-bay – have found better places to invest their advertising dollar. The newspapers have reduced the number of pages they print and have fired police or city hall reporters. To survive they will have to develop a viable internet product (see the New York Times)
A large problem with print is the fact that there are only a few major newspaper conglomerates, buying more and more local papers all the time, and then shedding large amounts of staff. The value of local papers is investigative reporting, because fraud and graft are just as popular at the local level. And we’re losing out on that.
The dollar matters more than the truth. So much winning; I just can’t stand it.
If you live in a smaller town (mine is 20,000) this can be devastating. My local paper went out over 2 years ago. It covered everything. Now you have to go to facebook or the local event page. It sure has led to less transparency in political events in our town. Sad!
I subscribe to the local paper bc working for one helped me through undergrad, but the opinion section has me wishing I were not supporting such horrible right-wing bs. The obits in a pandemic mic has merit.
Yeah. I mourn the passing of good local journalism. But y’know what? I don’t mourn the loss of jobs in phone-booth maintenance or buggy-whip manufacturing.

I’d be more worried about that beam labeled “faith in elections” collapsing overhead.
