Lew: The rushes and/or straw on the floor served the same purpose as carpet or rugs, thermal insulation, sound absorbtion, and dirt/mud/water control. For a good housekeeper, the rushes near the door might be changed daily in wet weather, and all of them would be changed several times a year, when they became crushed down and before they started to smell.Same as today, some people might feed their dogs scraps from the table, but chucking bones and scraps over your shoulder onto the floor would result in you being fed outside with the rest of the animals.
