Reflect and remember. Do it in your own way.

Never forget the meaning for the holiday.

Fortunately, most gravesites are six feet apart. Go pay your respects.

Mixed emotions.

Just who do they have buried in their back yard? Truth to tell though, one golf course I used to play had tombstones in the trees between the fairways.

Um… why does grilling dinner in the backyard indicate buried bodies, or a cemetery?

And why do they have to be visiting one?

Not everyone does, just because it’s Memorial Day, especially in 2020, when where most of us live, we can’t gather.

Some people don’t believe in it, anyway… others are in families with no military dead, or with their grave sites too far away to visit…

in the last 12 years, I’ve lost several people with whom I was very close… and not one of them is buried within 35 miles of me.

My dad was the only one in the military.

That cemetery, which he chose, is the farthest from me… over 400 miles south.

My Mom was buried there about 40 years ago… and he joined her, in 2008.

I’ve never lived down there… that’s what happens with grown children in military life….

I’ve got no relatives or acquaintances nearby, and couldn’t visit or stay with them if I did, under quarantine.

I hope that doesn’t mean someone will judge me, if I decide to grill a hamburger.

Memorial Day is for those “who made the ultimate sacrifice” as part of their military service. Since it was made an official holiday we have started to realize, especially re 9/11 and in 2020, that there are other professional and service personnel who made the same sacrifice for our country and other Americans.

Veterans have another day in November so it would not diminish the original Memorial Day intent to extend recognition to all of those who In their prime understood and accepted the final outcome of what they committed to do.

As for the commenters who are trying to politicize today’s forum, this is not the time or the place for me or anyone to express our thoughts about your actions. You will have to look within to know if your words and actions today are moral and you will have to live with the consequences.

From a retried Military man, when asked about Memorial Day and Veterans Day, ‘Live a life that was worthy of the sacrifices’. GOD BLESS them all.

We are the land of the free because of the brave.

What a cute team!

I knew a man who fought at Iwo Jima and it took a great toll on his life. He just passed. He’s who we commemorate this day

That’s a lot of.. hot dogs?… burgers?… for just two people.

I hate that “Just doing their job” BS. Any career soldier is literally “just doing their job”. Any DRAFTED soldier or personnel who sacrifice for their country are due a little extra respect in my mind. I hope doctor and nurses do receive due respect for their work through this.

Pause.. take a moment.. Remember those who fought and made the Ultimate Sacrifice so you & I can have the Freedoms we cherish.

None of my relatives that are buried are anywhere less than a 24 hour drive away but all the recent ones were cremated. However, the memorial day I most remember isn’t seeing my great aunts go to decorate family graves. It was visiting my very alive great grandmother who had finally gone into a nursing home. It smelled dreadful but she smiled and called me her hummingbird. I hope I was nice to her.

I’m glad I have these comments to read so that you folks can explain this strip to me – most of the time.

My, my, my. We in North America have been very fortunate that a world war was not waged across this continent. You can’t imagine the all too certainty of death if you just look at your conqueror in the wrong way. Why? Because of those who voluntarily or involuntarily offered their lives and freedom to allow you to be so cavalier about your lifestyle. All it takes is a minute or two, at some period in the day, to reflect, and be thankful that you don’t live under a repressive and self serving regime. If it weren’t for them, you wouldn’t be making comment on this site.

Politicise or advertise. The real value of every “holiday”.

To be clear and mildly cynical;Armed Forces Day – honors all active duty and reserve service members, including National Guard.Veterans Day – honors all who have served in the country’s military – living or dead.Memorial Day – Honors those who died while in military service.

If you want to honor those who have died in service to others, and I respect that, you are of course free to do so. Just don’t usurp the meaning of these days.

Here comes the cynical part – should Congress decide to create a holiday to honor all the first responders, doctors, nurses and other vital medial personnel – we know that the only people getting the day off will be government employees and school children. The dedicated people being honored will still have to work.

Jimmy did a good job on this one, it allows the reader to interpret the strip as they please. no preaching.

We must never forget!

But never say “Happy Memorial Day.”
