As they were fired and subjected to all sorts of laws that amounted to petty harassment, an atmosphere of hatred that led to the gas chambers of auschi-eeeeeeeeek! You're not born here!!!
The Indians were in Arizona for hundreds of years before the Arizona legislature even existed. Then the Mexicans were there for another couple of hundred years–until white people took Arizona away from Mexico.
I’ve known Mexicans & Muslims who were born here, my whole life (over ½C). Our local tribe with casino rights was driven out of their previous home by another tribe. They don’t live here any more because they’ve moved again. Now we have members of tribes from San Diego, Sonora, Samoa, Saskatchewan, Seoul & Scotland. People move. What’s the big deal?
When I was in Arizona, the influx from Michigan was a lot more oppressive, by driving prices up, than the influx from Mexico who were actually employed, rather than retired “snow birds”. Copper mines were shutting down because Bolivian copper was cheaper(and mined by the same companies “international units”), so a service economy with low wages was replacing “production”.
The new series of bills includes provisions to prohibit the children of illegal immigrants from attending public schools.
I’m all for sealing the border. You’re not a real country without real borders. After you deliberately let people in, however, it seems unsporting to harass them and pretend they’re breaking some law.
Don’t like open borders? Punish the pro-business Republicans who like the way illegals drive down wages, and punish the cynical Democrats who knows their kids will vote Democratic.
Why don’t they just end the drug war so people on all sides of the border are safer?
Also, if we have free trade, then we need free movement of labour otherwise there is no possibility for a free market. A restrictive border is an unfair advantage to employers who have the unfair ability to move unlike labour. It isn’t a free economy - though it may be in keeping with years of “.Capitalism” You have to choose. Do you want free trade or a closed border? If you try both, like now, you get neither, plus racism as a strategy to handle the hypocrisy.
Maybe, just maybe, if we got rid of the concept of “countries,” and instead of borders we had total freedom of movement anywhere on the planet, we might take the next giant leap toward being a civilized, evolved species. There are no borders in nature.
You have a point, mr. Rall. The right-wing rich use the illegal immigrants as scapegoats and yet they pushed for NAFTA and they hire them illegally, therefore commiting a crime…too.
It’s like more-virtuous-than-thou people who rant about the promiscuity of women (but never men!) and prostitution and yet go see prostitutes themselves!
It’s a good cartoon, Mr. Rall, but I disagree with you about the borders. We should open them, welcoming people who want to work, and then giving them numbers so that we can tax their incomes and supply them with the largesse of a wealthy society that truly promotes the general welfare: universal health-care, good schools, safe water, and affordable utilities.
The flip side of a border-free planet is that YOU get to go anywhere you want, too. Believe it or not, there are plenty of other nice places in the world besides the U.S.A.

Razor-sharp wit for sure, tho you would be surprised at how many choose to believe such a stretch of credulity

Lots of Arizonians weren’t “born there” and are quite welcome. They happen to be there legally.

What does Mr. Rall have against Jews?

The unfortunate truth is that many white people still have serious problems respecting brown people.

Geez Ted - get a grip…..
Perhaps you haven’t had illegals shooting at you and killing your livestock.
Perchance Ted would allow his own house to be used as a safe haven for all those without green cards …. or the drug mules!
