My ex-girlfriend’s sister’s roommate had a Manx with the extra toes often associated with that breed (as a kitten she’d try to run across the shag carpet and get the extra toes caught in it). I took to calling her, in the sweetest voice possible, “my fuzzy little freak”.
I’ve never seen a squirrel worried about being caught by a cat. Most of them just go about their business, run away at the last second, and the scream abuse from a high branch while the cat pretends it doesn’t care.

That “trouble snuggle” works on small kids too. Catch them just before they are about to do something awful and pretend you just noticed them!
