When he gets older he will know the difference between a sled and a toboggan.

“Pallbearer Peak” can wait. We had a series of three closely-spaced terraced hills that we used to sled ride on at the local college. We called them “The Three Hills”. During summer, the college would put a movie screen past the bottom of the third hill for night-time movies. And the students would camp out on blankets on the terraces to watch.

The two sledding hills near where I was raised gave you a choice: into the creek or into a barbed-wired fence. The former was more of a challenge because of the trees.

That ain’t the Calvin known by all. The real Calvin would end up at the bottom of the precipice, picking pricker bush out of his teeth, while Hobbes, still standing on the top of the hill, looks down on him shaking his head in disbelief. THAT"S THE CALVIN I KNOW!

Love Calvin’s face art in panel 2. Totally not Calvin, but it’s still Calvin.

I love Calvin’s and Hobbes’ access to ‘dangerous’ play areas. That toboggan really gets a workout in the winter – like the wagon does during non-snow times. I wonder what the ‘true’ topography is – of these adventure spots [considering Calvin’s imagination].

I consider myself a well educated man but how is it that a 6 year old is more articulate and has a larger vocabulary than I?

We had no snow, but did have a trolley and a really steep gravel road with two turns and a ditch to stop in at the bottom. Truly terrifying!

More than 60 years ago, we tobogganed down “Bald Mountain” (MI) full-speed into the trunk of a thorn tree, catapulting me and my 3 siblings into the branches. The ride was absolutely worth it.
